Description

Grovetown Lagoon is one of the few natural wetlands remaining on the Wairau Plain. It is a beautiful oxbow lake which was formed when the Wairau River changed its course roughly 155 years ago when a bend was cut off and became a circular lake. Picnic tables are located near the track to the birdwatching hide, and beside the Wairau river. Bench seats are found near the first bridge and between the boardwalk and Springs Wetland Feel free to launch your kayak on the lagoon. The best launching area is a carpeted ramp at the south western corner of the lagoon, near the first bridge you see when approaching the Lagoon. There are no toilets at the lagoon yet but plans for these are in hand. Although dogs on leash may be brought to the lagoon, because of the bird life here we encourage you to leave your dog at home when you visit. No camping or overnight parking.
