Tarn Bivvy

Description
This is a basic two-bunk hut located in Ruahine Forest Park in the Hawke's Bay region. There are no fees. Bookings not required - first come, first served.
Facilities include mattresses, non-flush toilets and water (not treated - boil before use).
Tarn Bivouac was constructed by the New Zealand Forest Service in 1960. Located at an altitude of 1340m on the open tops, it can experience extreme weather conditions. Snow, high winds and rainfall can occur at any time of the year.
Access Tarn bivouac from Mill Roadend. From State Highway 50, turn onto Makaretu Road. Take your first left into Mill Road and continue to the roadend.
From the roadend descend into the Tukituki River and follow it upstream to a large flat on the true left. Rosvalls Track starts at the downstream end of this flat and heads up to Black Ridge. At the top of the ridge turn north and follow the track, then an unmarked route to Tarn Bivouac.
