Description

This is a serviced 12-bunk hut in the Ruahine Forest Park in the Manawatu region. Fees apply. Beds can be booked during peak season (Labour Weekend April). Outside this period, hut tickets or hut passes must be used. Facilities include heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets and water (not treated - boil before use). You must bring your own portable cooking stoves. There is a wood burner in the hut for heating, which may be used for cooking. The start of the Rangiwahia Hut track is accessed from the Renfrew Roadend car park. To get there, travel to the settlement of Rangiwahia, then turn on to Te Parapara Road and continue on to Renfrew Road. Follow this to the carpark at the road end. Please make sure you leave all gates as you find them and take care around livestock. Rangiwahia Hut sits above the bush line on the Whanahuia Range. A well-defined track zig zags over an old slip, through the beech forest up to the tussock covered open tops. It is a two - three hour walk, depending on your fitness and how often you stop to take advantage of the views. The Rangiwahia-Deadmans Loop (7 - 9 hours) is a good option to stretch your legs and explore the tops on a clear day, but due to travel on open tops this should not be attempted in poor visibility or bad weather. During the booking period Fees are paid at the time of booking. If you want to use a Backcountry Hut Pass contact the Palmerston North Office. Outside the booking period Before you go, buy 1 Serviced Hut Ticket (green for adults, orange for youth) or 3 Standard Hut Tickets (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night's stay. Put these in the honesty box at the hut. Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Serviced and Standard huts for a 6 or 12 month period.
