Kotepato Hut

Description
This is a standard six-bunk hut in the Waioeka Conservation Area. Fees apply. Bookings not required - first come, first served.
Facilities include heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets and water (not treated - boil before use).
Access is from Wairata Road, and crosses private farmland. Permission is required, and access may be closed during lambing.
The route to Kotepato Hut crosses the Wairata River, soon after leaving the open fire and a coverd deck. Water supply is a tank.
The Nga Tapuwae o Taneatua Tramping Club built the covered deck and carries out small maintenance, cleaning, track clearing and marking on the Kotepato Track and Hut.
Getting there
Travel halfway (42 km) through the Waioeka Scenic Gorge on SH2 from Opotiki. Turn into Wairata Road and travel for 2 km before turning right and crossing a bridge onto Redpath Rd.
Kotepato Hut can be accessed off the Moanui, Nikau, Wairata Track.
Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night's stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 6 or 12-month period.
