Description

This is a standard 20-bunk hut in the Tararua Forest Park in the Kapiti region. Field hut was one of the first purpose built tramping huts in the country, and is the oldest surviving recreational hut in the Tararua Ranges. It is located just below the bushline at an altitude of 900m. Fees apply. Bookings not required - first come, first served Facilities include heating (wood burner with firewood provided), mattresses, non-flush toilets and water (not treated - boil before use). Field Hut is best accessed via taki Forks. taki Forks is 19 km inland from taki township approximately 1 hr 30 min drive from Wellington or Palmerston North. The easiest turnoff from SH1 is at taki Gorge Road, just south of the SH1 bridge over the taki River. The last 5 km of the taki Gorge Road is unsealed, narrow and windy drive carefully. Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night's stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 6 or 12-month period.
